Transportation Happenings – May 22, 2017

The following “Transportation Happenings” occurred during the past week that you may find of interest.
1. The Panama Canal tonnage volume is up 7% during the past month giving indication that larger vessels (including containerships) are starting to take advantage of the new larger locks.
2. Global Container Volumes are up 10% so far in 2017 versus 2016. This is the first indicator that trade is indeed starting to pick up.
3. UBER (who many know has turned the Taxi Industry topsy turvy) is now entering the Trucking Arena. Click link below to read article.
4. The State of South Carolina has voted to raise the gasoline tax $0.12 over 6 years with the first 2 cents to go in to effect in July 2017. No mention of raise in diesel tax at this moment.
5. Hyundai has negotiated a sale/leaseback of 10 vessels. Total value of the deal is some $758 million dollars. Hyundai is just one of several Container Shipping Companies with financial problems.
