Transportation Happenings – January 15, 2018

The following “Transportation Happening” occurred during the past week that you may find of interest.
1. It has been brought to my attention that even though we have now converted to ELDs for Logging purposes it is still a requirement that all Owner-Operators have a least sufficient blank paper log pages in his/her rig to be able to record 8 days of operations. Hence, I recommend that each O/O have a blank log book in his/her rig. This is required in case the ELD Device malfunctions and one must convert to a paper log for a short period of time.
2. There are seven MegaShips (19-21,000 TEU Capacity) during the Month of January 2018.
3. Ships are running so full on the TransPacific Tradelane that rate surcharges are being imposed.
4. We are supposed to see President Trump’s infrastructure plan in February 2018. I sure hope there is very active plans for both our Highways and Ports.
5. COSCO has deferred the delivery of several large MegaShips until next year. (Please see attachment)
6. The Los Angeles City Attorney has sued 3 Port Drayage Companies stating they are mis-classifying their Owner-Operators as Contractors versus Employees.
7. Jim Johnston age 78 and OOIDA President from 1974 until Present has passed away due to lung cancer. He will be well remembered by many.
